Payroll Responsibilities

Introduction

Regardless of who processes your organizations payroll, it is organizational leaderships’ responsibility to understand and engage in the payroll process. Payroll is generally the largest operating expense for a nonprofit organization. It is vital that leadership to be able to navigate, review and inquire regarding the payroll process. This engagement in the process will result in a more complete understanding of the organizations payroll, meet employee needs, board expectations and ensure compliance with regulations. Ultimately, executive leadership is responsible for payroll compliance and best practices.

Board Responsibility

The IRS has the ability to go after individual officers, directors, or check signers who could have done

something about the payment of a liability.

Board members can face personal liability for employment taxes of an organization.

Directors and Officers insurance does not always cover this risk.
